From Bad Habit to Healthy Behavior: Roadblocks to Behavior Change

Changing habits is HARD! Innocent behaviors seem to change into bad habits before we realize what happened. Many times we get hung-up on roadblocks that keep us from moving forward with out goals. In my life coaching career, I help people overcome some of these roadblocks.

Maybe this will help you as you move towards a happier, healthier YOU!

Lets look at some common roadblocks people encounter.

  • Feeling Defective:
What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I get this? Any new behavior takes time to learn. When we were children, our brains were rapidly creating new pathways as we acquired a new skill. Now that we are adults, we have solid pathways that need diverting much like diverting water from a river. It’s HARD but not impossible! Be gentle with yourself as you learn new skills and trust in the process set forth by your coach or plan.

  • Overwhelm:
Many people feel overwhelmed when they learn a new skill. This feeling is intensified when there are emotions tied to the result. This is an important roadblock because it is an indication that we may need to process the information, and emotions, at a slower rate. Remember that there is no “normal” timeline for developing a new behavior. It is as unique and individual as you!

  • Feeling Stuck:
Many times new information doesn’t “click” right away. That is okay! Feelings of being stuck are a common part of learning a new kill or trying a new behavior. Trust the process (and yourself) to get where you need to be. Taking the pressure off of yourself allows the “panic” area of your brain to relax so the front brain can do its job! Keep focusing on the individual steps that need to be taken and it’ll get easier.

  • Perfectionism:
There is NO “perfect” way to learn this new information. This is the GOOD news! You will learn new information, and develop your new, healthier habits in a way (and timeline) that make the most sense to you! Everyone learns and assimilates new information differently. Let go of the way you think it “should” be and focus on, and accept, the way it IS!

WE CARE!

Twin Cities Life Coaching is passionate about self-care. If we don't take care of ourselves first, how do we expect to care well for others in our lives?

Think of the oxygen mask in an airplane. The instructions given to you before taking flight insist that if there is a change in cabin pressure, we are to put on our own mask BEFORE we assist others with theirs.

Our hectic, over-scheduled, over-worked lives push us to meet everyone else's needs and deadlines before our own. We have it backwards and need to take an airplane oxygen mask approach instead.

Take care of yourself first, and the rest will follow.
